FVI grows their cucumbers from seed. Through Hartung Brothers Inc. cucumbers are contracted with area farmers who grow the cucumbers. Growers scout the fields daily to reassure that they are growing healthy cucumbers. Once they are ready for harvest, the cucumbers are harvested by hand, delivered to the receiving station at FVI for washing and sorting and then shipped to the processors. Many are then made into pickles.
Cucumbers have great nutritional value. One cup of sliced cucumbers only has 20 calories. They are fat-free. They contain many of your essential vitamins needed daily, Vitamin A, B6, C, E and K. Cucumbers contain antioxidants, B-carotene, A-carotene, zea-xanthin, and lutein. Cucumbers contain potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, molybdenum, magnesium, silicon and fiber.
